Presenting excerpts from upcoming Marigny Opera Ballet’s premiere ‘Agua Mole Pedra Dura’ and other original compositions, honoring Brazil.

Geovane Santos, an Afro Brazilian hailing from Belo Horizonte and currently residing in New Orleans, is a versatile artist who excels as a guitarist, vocalist, composer, researcher, photographer, videographer, and educator. His remarkable talent has garnered recognition, including the prestigious 2017 Louis Armstrong Foundation Jazz Composer Award presented by ASCAP in collaboration with the University of New Orleans (UNO).

Expanding from his traditional guitar-centric power trio to the sonic richness of a septet with percussion and a horn section, Santos’ Orkestra Maria Fumaça is an Afro Brazilian Jazz ensemble created with the intent to bring life and sound to two original works commissioned by the Marigny Opera Ballet’s ‘Agua Mole Pedra Dura Tanto Bate Até que Fura’ to be premiered February/March 2024. Blending Afro Brazilian rhythms with modern jazz and contemporary classical music, Santos’ compositions explore the complexity of polyrhythms, atonality, polyphony, Afro Brazilian musical lyricism, and improvisation to inspire and provoke nuanced movement. In addition to ballet excerpts, other original compositions and arrangements will also be presented.
